Turn a messy pile of browser tabs into neat named groups
ChatGPT can now work inside your Chrome tabs and group a whole messy window for you while you watch.

How do I get ChatGPT to organize all my open Chrome tabs?
Install the ChatGPT extension for Chrome, open its side panel and ask it in Work to group your open tabs by topic. As of October 2026, regular Chat can read across your tabs, but Work is what lets ChatGPT act on them, like making tab groups. If you only want a list of what's open and what's safe to close, Chat is enough. Tell it not to close anything itself, so you stay in control.

Your prompt
Fill in your details. Skip any you like.
ChatGPT opens with your prompt already typed in. It's copied too, just in case.
The prompt that gets copied
Look at all the tabs I have open in this window and organize them for me. 1. Group them into tab groups by topic. Use these groups if they fit: [MY GROUPS, e.g. Client work, Holiday trip, Recipes, Bills]. Make a new group only when a tab doesn't fit any of them. 2. Give each group a short name and its own color. 3. Put duplicate tabs, finished searches and pages I probably don't need anymore in a separate group called To close. Don't close anything yourself. 4. Don't sign in, submit forms or change anything on any page. When you're done, give me a short list: each group, how many tabs it has, and the tabs in To close with one line on why.
Use the ChatGPT extension in Chrome to sort dozens of open tabs into named groups by topic. You get a tidy tab bar plus a short list of tabs that look safe to close.
Step by step
- Install the ChatGPT extension from the Chrome Web Store and sign in
- Open the ChatGPT side panel in the window full of tabs
- Switch to Work so it can act on your tabs
- Paste the prompt and fill in your groups
- Check the closing list before you close anything
What you'll get
Your open tabs sorted into named, colored groups, plus a short list of duplicate or finished tabs you can close in one click.
The ChatGPT Chrome extension is on all plans. Acting on tabs needs Work mode, which has usage limits that vary by plan.
