See exactly which files and memories shaped a Copilot answer

One click shows the saved memories and past chats that shaped an answer, so a confident guess can't hide.

About 2 minutes per answer A few steps

Published . Steps as of October 2026.

How can I tell if Copilot used my files or just guessed?

Open Sources under the answer and check the Personalization tab, then ask Copilot to tag every sentence with the file it came from or mark it as inference. As of October 2026, the Personalization tab shows the memories and past chats that shaped a reply, while the Sources list shows the files. Use the tagging prompt when you'll share or act on the answer. For a quick personal question, the Sources panel alone is usually enough.

The prompt that gets copied

Go back over your last answer and show your work.

1. List every work file, email or chat you actually used, with its title and last-modified date. Only list sources that also appear in the Sources panel under your answer.
2. Rewrite the answer with a source tag after each sentence. If a sentence came from no source, tag it [inference].
3. Tell me which parts came from my saved memories or past chats rather than from files.
4. If more than half the answer is inference, say so in one line at the top.

The question was about [MY QUESTION, e.g. what we agreed with Harlow Group on pricing]. Don't add new facts while you do this.

Check the new Personalization tab under any Copilot answer, then ask Copilot to tag every claim with its source. You'll know what came from your files and what it guessed.

Step by step

  1. Ask Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat your question as usual
  2. Click Sources under the answer and open the Personalization tab
  3. Paste the prompt below as a follow-up
  4. Open any source it lists before you share the answer
