Know Before You Build: The Free Tiers That Quietly Shrank

A free plan is just a number on a pricing page, and that number can move after you've built your business on top of it. Here's how I check a free tier in three minutes before I commit.

Key takeaways

  • Free tiers are marketing decisions, not contracts. The plan you researched a year ago can offer something completely different to whoever signs up today, and no one sends a warning email when it changes.
  • Some 'free' plans are trials in disguise. Freshdesk is $0 for 1-2 agents for 6 months, and Riverside gives a one-time 2-hour allotment with a watermark on everything you export.
  • Watch the word 'credits.' Gamma's free 400 credits are a one-time grant that never refills while paid tiers reset 1,000 monthly, and its branding stays on your deck; Notta's free plan caps you at 3 minutes and cannot export a transcript at all.
  • A $0 plan can still cost you per sale. Wave's free Starter is genuinely $0 with unlimited invoices, but card payments carry 2.9% + 60c per transaction and Amex 3.4% + 60c, so compare the transaction line, not just the sticker.
  • If your tier just got cut, do three things this week: ask support in writing whether your account is grandfathered, export everything the tool will let you export today, and screenshot the terms you signed up under.
  • Before you build, open the vendor's own live pricing page, find the first limit you'll hit, and search for 'months,' 'trial,' 'one-time,' and 'credit card.'
  • Favor companies that earn elsewhere. tawk.to ($0, 'Free. Forever.,' no limit on agents), HubSpot's free tools (up to 2 users, 1,000 contacts, no time limit), and Wave's $0 Starter tend to stay honest.
  • The annual price shown by default is a commitment dressed as a discount. HubSpot's US page shows Starter at $7/mo/seat billed annually versus $20/mo/seat billed monthly, and pages resolve by location, so read the monthly figure in your own currency.

Questions people ask

Which free plans got quietly shrunk in 2026?
The ones I re-checked on their live pages tell the story. Freshdesk no longer has a standing free plan at all: its pricing page reads '$0 for 1-2 agents for 6 months,' which is a trial, not a plan. Riverside's free tier is a one-time 2-hour allotment with a watermark on everything. Gamma's free plan is 400 credits at signup that never refill, and Notta's free plan caps conversations at 3 minutes and cannot export a transcript at all.
My free plan just got cut. What do I do this week?
Three moves, in this order. First, message support in writing and ask whether your existing account is grandfathered on your current plan, and whether that changes if you upgrade, downgrade, or cancel. Second, export everything the tool will let you export while your access still works, and check what export is even possible first, since some free plans (Notta, for one) can't export at all. Third, screenshot the pricing page and your billing screen with the date visible, so you have evidence of the terms you signed up under. Then go shopping for a replacement.
Do existing users get grandfathered when a free plan changes?
Sometimes, and it's rarely announced. When it happens, the legacy plan just stays attached to your account with nothing labelling it as legacy. The practical risk is that a legacy tier is usually tied to the account as it stands, so changing plans or letting the account lapse and returning later can put you on today's terms instead of yours. Ask support in writing before you touch your plan.
How can I tell if a 'free' plan is really a trial?
Look for four tells: a number of months or days attached to the free price, a credit card required just to start, the word 'one-time' on any allotment of hours or credits, and a watermark or 'powered by' logo on what your audience sees. Free-forever plans generally have no expiry and don't ask for your card up front. Freshdesk ('$0 for 1-2 agents for 6 months') and Riverside (one-time 2 hours, watermark) each trip one of these.
Is a free plan always cheaper than paying?
No, because a $0 monthly price can still take a cut of every sale. Wave's free Starter plan is genuinely $0 with unlimited invoices, but card payments carry 2.9% plus 60 cents per transaction, and American Express payments carry 3.4% plus 60 cents. If you process any real volume, that per-transaction fee is your real cost, so compare the transaction line, not just the monthly sticker.
What does 'the credits never refill' mean for Gamma?
Gamma's free plan gives you 400 credits at signup, but they're a one-time grant that doesn't reset. Paid tiers advertise 1,000 monthly credits that refill each month. So on the free plan you can burn through your entire allowance making a few drafts and never get more, and Gamma's branding stays on your deck until you upgrade.
Which free tools actually stay free?
The ones whose business model isn't upselling you tend to stay honest: tawk.to ($0, 'Free. Forever.,' with 'no limits to the number of agents you can add,' because it earns from renting human agents and a branding-removal fee), HubSpot's free tools (free for up to 2 users, 1,000 contacts, no time limit), and Wave (a genuinely $0 Starter plan). Note that tawk.to charges for some add-ons and Wave charges a per-transaction fee on card payments, so read those lines.
How do I check a free tier before I build on it?
Open the vendor's own live pricing page yourself rather than trusting a review or your memory, find the single limit you'll hit first (contacts, minutes, seats, or the transaction fee), and search the page for 'months,' 'trial,' 'one-time,' and 'credit card.' It takes about three minutes. You can also paste the pricing page into the Claude desktop app and ask it to act as a skeptical analyst and flag whether it's a real free plan or a trial in disguise.
Why do prices sometimes look different than what I've read elsewhere?
Two reasons. First, pricing pages change often and most articles don't get updated, which is how a free plan that shrank can still be quoted at its old, more generous numbers all over the web. Second, many pages resolve prices by your location, so the same page can show visitors in different countries different currencies and different numbers. HubSpot's paid pricing is a good example, so always re-check in your own currency.
