Can I use free AI tools for commercial work?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and it depends entirely on the specific tool's terms. Some free tiers grant commercial rights in writing (Ideogram says you're "free to use them for any purpose, including commercial use," and Cleanfeed Lite says its free tier "includes commercial use"). Others explicitly forbid it: CapCut's free version is for "private, non-commercial use" and ElevenLabs' free plan "cannot be used for any commercial purpose." Always check the plan you're actually on before using the output for anything that touches your revenue.
Is CapCut free okay for business videos?
CapCut's terms of service describe the Services as "provided for private, non-commercial use" and prohibit using them "to advertise or perform any commercial solicitation." A promo edit for a paid program fits that description. Its U.S. terms also take a "nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, transferable, sublicensable license" to content you upload, which is why client footage, unreleased paid-product material, and footage of clients who haven't signed a release don't belong in a free editor. If you want to use CapCut for commercial video, read your current terms and move to the tier that grants those rights. This isn't legal advice, so confirm with your own attorney.
Does upgrading to a paid AI plan make my old free content commercial?
Not always, and ElevenLabs is the clear example. Its terms state that "Content created outside of a paid subscription (before or after) cannot be used commercially." So audio you generated on the free plan doesn't retroactively gain commercial rights when you upgrade. If you know a voiceover is going into something you sell, generate it while you're on the paid plan, not before.
Can I sell music made with Suno's free plan?
No, based on Suno's own terms. Free and Basic tier users agree to use Outputs "solely for your lawful, internal, personal and non-commercial purposes, provided that you give attribution credit to Suno." Suno assigns its rights in Output to Pro and Premier subscribers for work generated during that paid subscription, so if a track is going into something you sell, generate it while you're on a paid tier.
What counts as commercial use for a coach or consultant?
More than most people assume. It generally includes promo videos for a paid program, voiceovers in a course you sell, images on a sales or landing page, anything delivered to a client, ads, and content that promotes a paid offer even if that individual post is free to view. A useful rule: if it feeds your revenue, treat it as commercial.
Which free AI tools clearly allow commercial use?
Several say so in writing. Ideogram's terms say "We do not claim ownership of your generated images, and you're free to use them for any purpose, including commercial use." Cleanfeed Lite says it's "free to get started, and that includes commercial use." Runway's terms say it "does not claim ownership of any of your Inputs or Outputs" and "does not restrict your commercial use of your Outputs." Descript says that "as between you and Descript, you own all right, title, and interest in and to any Input and Output," though its Premium Media stock library is licensed separately. Terms can change, so verify the clause on the live page before you rely on it.
How do I check whether a specific tool allows commercial use?
Paste the tool's pricing page and terms of service into the Claude desktop app and ask four things: does the free tier allow commercial use, does the tool take a license to your uploads or output, is attribution required, and does free-tier content stay non-commercial after you upgrade. Tell it to quote the exact sentence and say "unclear" rather than guess. Then read that clause yourself on the live page. This article includes two copy-paste prompts: one for a single new tool, and one that audits every tool already in your stack.
Do free AI tools require me to credit them?
Some do. ElevenLabs' free plan, for example, requires that you "must attribute it to ElevenLabs" when you use free-tier audio, and Suno's free and Basic tiers require attribution credit to Suno. For a premium, bespoke brand, a required credit on your sales asset is a real cost, so check the attribution terms before you build something polished on a free tier.
