Turn Any PDF Into an Answer Machine You Can Ask Anything

Long contracts, reports, and manuals hide the 1 line you need. Give the PDF to AI, tell it to answer only from the file, and ask. No more scrolling for 20 minutes.

Key takeaways

  • Any PDF becomes something you can ask, instead of scroll.
  • The key rule: make AI answer only from the file and say when an answer is not there.
  • Work a real contract in 5 minutes: ground it, ask what binds you, pull the dates, hunt the traps, then read the flagged lines.
  • Ask focused questions, obligations, dates, risks, summaries, definitions, and always ask for the exact quote.
  • Compare 2 versions to catch a worse term slipped into a "small update."
  • Ask beats search and skim, because it works on meaning, not the exact word.
  • For real stakes it is a fast first reader, not the final word. Read the flagged lines yourself or take them to a professional.

Questions people ask

How do I stop AI from making things up about a document?
Tell it to answer only from the file and to say "not in the document" when the answer is not there, and ask it to quote the exact line for each answer. That keeps it from filling gaps with a confident guess and lets you verify in seconds.
What kinds of documents work best?
Contracts, reports, manuals, benefits packets, leases, policies, and research papers all work well. Anything where the answer is buried in length and you need it fast.
Can I trust it for a legal contract?
Use it as a fast first reader to find and summarize the relevant clauses, then read those parts yourself or take them to a professional. For anything binding, keep your own eyes on the final wording. It finds; it does not decide.
How do I compare 2 versions of a contract?
Paste both, labeled A and B, and ask for every meaningful difference in plain English, with anything worse for you in B flagged and both lines quoted. That catches a worse term slipped into a supposedly minor revision.
Is this safe for confidential client documents?
It can be, if you know where the document goes before you upload it. Understand what you are uploading and to which tool, especially with a client's private data. Our guide on what happens to client data you paste into AI covers how to do this on sensitive files without getting burned.
Why is asking better than searching the document?
Search only finds the exact word you type, so if the file says "termination" and you searched "cancel," you miss it. Asking works on meaning, so it finds the right clause however it is worded, and reads every line for you.
Do I have to re-upload the file each time?
In a one-off chat, yes. In Claude Code, the desktop app, you can keep documents in one place your assistant reads, so you can ask again later without re-uploading, and stay deliberate about what you share.
What is the single most useful question to ask?
For most documents: "List my obligations, the key dates, and anything risky, in plain English, and quote the exact line for each." That 1 question surfaces what binds you, what you must not miss, and what to look at twice.
