Can I have 2 Claude accounts?
Yes. There's no rule against having a personal Claude account and a separate work account. If both are on the same email address, Claude handles it natively: one login can belong to your personal account and to one or more Team or Enterprise organizations, and you switch by clicking your initials in the lower left. If they're on different email addresses, they're 2 separate logins and you'll need the launcher setup in this guide to use both at once.
Can I run 2 Claude accounts at the same time on one Mac?
Yes. The Claude desktop app can run a second time pointed at a separate data folder, which gives you 2 independent windows, each signed into a different account, running simultaneously. You create that second launch with a small app you make in Script Editor in about 2 minutes. No terminal and no third-party software required.
Does the Claude desktop app have an account switcher?
Not for separate logins. If your personal account and your Team organization share one email address, you get a built-in switcher under your initials in the lower left. But if they're on different email addresses, they're 2 different logins, and the app holds one at a time. Multi-account switching is a frequently requested feature that hasn't shipped yet.
Will this delete my existing Claude chats or projects?
No. The second account uses a completely separate folder on your Mac. Your original profile isn't read, written, moved, or merged. The part that alarms people is that the second window opens totally empty, which looks exactly like data loss. It isn't. A new profile has no history because nothing has happened in it yet, and your original account is exactly where you left it.
Does Claude Code work in both accounts?
Yes. Claude Code runs inside the Claude desktop app, so each account gets its own, with its own separate projects and session history. Work you do in a client's or employer's account stays there, and your own projects stay in your account. Nothing crosses between them.
Should I duplicate the Claude app instead?
No. Copying the whole app and editing its internal settings is the most common advice online and it does work, but it costs around 750MB and, more importantly, the copy stops auto-updating. A few months later you're working in a stale version and have to redo the setup by hand. The launcher approach uses the one app you already have, so it stays current on its own.
Do I need to pay for an app to run multiple Claude accounts?
No. There are paid Mac apps that package this up with a nicer interface, but they use the same underlying mechanism as the 4-step setup in this guide. You're paying for packaging, not for a capability you'd otherwise be missing.
Can I add a third or fourth Claude account?
Yes. Repeat the same 4 steps with a different profile folder name and a different app name for each additional account. There's no practical limit, and each one stays completely independent of the others.
Can I share chats or projects between 2 Claude accounts?
Partly. You can create a shareable link to any single conversation, which captures a snapshot of everything sent up to that point including artifacts, and open it while signed into your other account. Projects are different: inside a Team or Enterprise organization you can share a project with other members of that same organization, but that sharing stops at the organization boundary, so a project in your personal account can't be shared into your work account.
Can I move my Claude history from one account to another?
No. Anthropic's support documentation states that exported data can't be imported into another personal Claude account and that migrating data between personal accounts isn't supported. You can export your own data from Settings > Privacy for backup, but there's no import on the receiving side. The only migration Claude offers is the one-way move of a personal account into a Team or Enterprise organization, which can't be reversed.
How do I share my actual work between 2 Claude accounts?
Point both accounts at the same folder on your Mac. Claude Code connects to a folder, and a folder is just a folder, so both accounts can open the same one and the files are shared instantly. Only the chat history stays separate. Avoid working in that folder from both accounts at the same time, since 2 assistants editing the same files in parallel can overwrite each other. For carrying context rather than files, ask the first account to write a handoff brief and paste it into the second as your opening message.
