Key takeaways

  • AEO gets you quoted, SEO gets you ranked. Answer engine optimization means structuring content so ChatGPT and Perplexity lift it into their answers. You need both layers, not one or the other.
  • Ranking #1 no longer guarantees the quote. Third-party studies show AI Overview citations shifting sharply away from top organic results toward well-structured, trustworthy pages, so a small niche business can now get quoted over a household name.
  • Do these three first this week: turn one page's heading into your customer's exact question with a 2 to 3 sentence answer under it, add an FAQ of the five real pre-purchase questions, and put the current year plus your credentials in the title.
  • The technical pieces (FAQ schema, llms.txt) need no code. Generate them by typing plain English into the Claude Code desktop app, with no terminal and no commands, or get the finished, installable skill inside the Solo Creators AI Studio.
  • AEO is consensus-driven. One page won't do it. AI cross-checks your site against Reddit, YouTube, reviews, and your Google Business Profile, and different engines trust very different kinds of sources.
  • Still invisible? Run the 5-minute diagnostic. Check robots.txt isn't blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot, confirm your answer is public and up top, refresh stale dates, and count your off-site consensus points. Most failures resolve at the crawler check or the consensus count.
  • Check for free and be patient. Ask ChatGPT your category question then 'what sources did you use?', and filter GA4 for AI referrals. Citations start in ~4 to 6 weeks, consistent patterns in 3 to 6 months.

Questions people ask

Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. They're layers, not rivals. SEO still gets you ranked and earns clicks, while AEO gets your words extracted into AI answers. Much of what makes a page rank well (clear writing, real expertise, fast loading) also makes it quotable, so you build on your SEO foundation rather than abandoning it. Plan to do both.
What's the difference between AEO, GEO, and LLM SEO?
They're three names for the same job. AEO (answer engine optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization), and 'LLM SEO' all describe structuring and earning your content so AI tools quote it. Don't get hung up on the acronym. The work is identical: clear answer-first pages, real expertise, the right structured files, and agreement across the places your customers gather.
How do I know if ChatGPT is already citing my business?
Two free checks. First, ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the question a customer would ask to find a business like yours, then ask 'what sources did you use?' If you're named, you're being cited. Second, open Google Analytics 4, go to Traffic Acquisition, and filter for referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI tools. Run both monthly to track progress.
How long until I see results from AEO?
Citations typically start appearing around 4 to 6 weeks after you restructure your key pages and add FAQ schema and an llms.txt file. Consistent, dependable patterns take more like 3 to 6 months as agreement builds across your site, reviews, and other platforms. Anyone promising guaranteed citations on a fixed date is overselling it.
Do I need schema and llms.txt if I can't code?
Yes, they help a lot, and no, you don't need to code them yourself. You can generate FAQPage schema and an llms.txt index by describing what you want in plain English inside the Claude Code desktop app, with no terminal and no commands. Or you can skip the manual build entirely: the Solo Creators AI Studio ships an installable skill that does the answer-first restructuring, the schema, and the llms.txt for you from a plain-English description of your business.
Could my website be blocking AI engines without me knowing?
Yes, and it's more common than you'd think. Type yoursite.com/robots.txt into your browser and look for Disallow rules under bot names like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended. Some site builders, CDNs, and 'block AI bots' plugins shut these crawlers out by default, which makes you invisible to answer engines no matter how well your pages are structured. If they're blocked, ask the Claude Code desktop app to fix the file for you in plain English.
How does the AI actually credit and link back to me?
Usually one of two ways: a citation or a mention. A citation pulls a specific answer from your page and attributes it, often with a numbered footnote or a clickable link the user can tap to reach you. A mention names you in passing without a source. Citations are the goal because they send a pre-sold visitor your way, and answer-first structure plus FAQ schema are what turn a vague mention into a clean, attributed citation.
Should a small business pay for an AEO tool?
Not to start. The two free checks (asking the engine directly then 'what sources did you use?', and filtering GA4 for AI referrals) tell a solo owner almost everything early on. Free and familiar tools (Notion to hold your core questions, Mailchimp's free tier for review requests, Buffer for consistent bios, Canva or Gamma for a quick video) cover the rest. Paid AEO-tracking tools are a later optimization, not a prerequisite.
