Do I need to code or use a terminal to connect Google Drive to Claude?
No. Claude Code is the Claude desktop app for Mac and PC. You click the plus sign in the chat box, choose Connectors, pick Google Drive, and approve the same 'Sign in with Google' screen you already know. There is no API key to paste, no terminal, and no config file. The whole thing takes about 60 seconds, and you can disconnect it just as fast.
Can Claude read the charts and images inside my documents?
No, and this is the limit that explains most disappointing results. Anthropic's connector documentation is clear that Claude extracts text only, and that images embedded inside documents are not processed. A slide whose entire point is a chart arrives as a title and a caption. A scanned contract with no text layer can come back almost empty. The fix is to ask it to list any file it could not read fully before it answers.
What file types can the Drive connector read?
Per Anthropic's connector docs, it can search and retrieve Google Docs, and read Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images, and Microsoft Office files. In practice that covers most of what sits in a working business folder. Just remember the text-only rule: it is reading the words in those files, so anything that exists only as a picture inside a document will not make it into the answer.
Can Claude save files back to my Google Drive?
Yes. The connector can save Claude-generated files directly to Drive and create folders to hold them. Name the destination folder in your prompt, because the Drive root fills up quickly, and put a date in the filename so versions sit beside each other. Saving is a write action, so read the output before that file goes anywhere near a client.
Can Claude delete or overwrite my Drive files?
Anthropic's connector documentation lists what the Drive connector does: search and retrieve Docs, read your files, save Claude-generated files, create folders, view permissions, and list recent changes. Deleting is not on that list. Saving new files is, so the sensible habit is the same one you would use with any assistant: name the folder you want output to land in, and review what it writes.
Why did I get a thin summary from a detailed document?
Almost always the image limit. Decks, reports, and design documents carry their best content inside charts, screenshots, and diagrams, and those are images. The text Claude could reach was the headings and captions, so that is what your summary reflects. Ask it which files it could not read fully, then open those few yourself. You will find the gap in seconds instead of discovering it on a client call.
Is my Drive data used to train Claude?
Anthropic's Google Workspace connector page states: 'We do not train our models on your Gmail, Drive, or Calendar connector data.' The same page says Claude only accesses your data when you explicitly ask a question or request an action requiring that information, and retrieves the minimum information needed. It looks when you ask, and only as far as the question needs.
How do I disconnect Google Drive later?
Open the Connectors menu in the desktop app and disconnect it, or revoke Claude's access from your Google account's connections page. Nothing you connect is permanent, and the Drive connector is separate from Gmail and Calendar, so removing 1 leaves the others untouched. Some people connect for a specific project and disconnect when it ships.
